Fresh water fishing may be better than salt water because it is more easily accessible to a greater number of people. Very few people will travel more than 30 miles to get to a body of salt water. And one must have that desire to be there at the proper tide at the proper time of that tide . Almost every fisherman has access to a stream, pool, pond, river or lake almost within walking distance to do freshwater angling. That is my reason for saying the popularity of fresh water fishing is due to easy accessibility.
First, freshwater fish taste better. Also, depending on the type of bait or lure and fishing location, one can choose what they will catch to some extent. Of course this is also true in salt water fishing, but one rarely pulls up something dangerous out of fresh water. And fresh water equipment is lighter and more easily transported. Lastly, the scenery when fishing in fresh water is usually much more interesting and varied than the boring ocean.
Depends on what you enjoy doing.
Some people may like stalking the flats for permit and bonefish,
some of us may like tossing drys at brook trout on small mountain streams. For some, it just a matter of Geography. Folks from Nebraska don’t have the ocean close to them.
So, is it better ?? Depends on who you ask and where you’re from.
Fresh water’s better!
I grew up on freshwater but I think saltwater’s better. There’s a lot more diversity in the ocean. Just my opinion.
Pheasant Tail gets my vote.
Depends on where you are and if you have access to saltwater or brackish water.
Trying to compare freshwater and saltwater fishing is like comparing football and baseball.
Personally, I like both!
I’m fortunate to say that I can fish 3 types of water, fresh, salt and brackish, close to my home. I’m also fortunate to say that I can fish the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico by simply crossing the street. I have all these options but for me to say one water type is better than the other would be a lie. I never know what I’m going to catch even when I target a selected fish. For instance, a week back I was targeting Snook in a brackish canal using finger mullet. I caught a 3 pound Peacock bass instead. SO I am going to say that Pheasant Tail is right on this one, it all depends on where you are and who you ask. Thumbs up Pheasant and J.~good luck catchin.’
I share your sentiments that saltwater fishing is much more fun as the fish caught vary in size and species. Pound for pound, the fishes also gives a much better fight. The fishing trip is also more varied in terms of types of rigs used, presentation…etc.
However, seasickness is always a fear as the oceans are unpredicable.
The washing up of gear after the trip is also a big turn off. (Sea water is corrosive!!!)
As for freshwater fishing, for me, its a much more relaxed enviroment and i usually travel light (as compared to offshore fishing).
In freshwater, waves are not an issue and i use all sorts of lures. I also need not crank quickly which is very tiring as compared to jigging when offshore fishing.
Washing up is less of a hassle.
Guess it depends on my mood when it comes to type of fishing, theres no favourite for myself.
I would say saltwater big game fishing is the best (if you can afford it), although some freshwater fish like sturgeon can put up a good fight.
freshwater…not much ocean here on the mountain top…
